Honest Medicine: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for Life-Threatening Diseases Paperback – January 1, 2011

4.6 out of 5 stars 173 ratings

HONEST MEDICINE introduces four lifesaving treatments that have been effectively treating--and in some cases curing--people for 25-90 years. However, for reasons of profitability (or lack thereof), these treatments have not been universally accepted. The treatments are: Low Dose Naltrexone for autoimmune diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, etc.) HIV/AIDS and some cancers; the Ketogenic Diet, for pediatric epilepsy; intravenous alpha lipoic acid, for terminal liver disease and some cancers; and Silverlon, for non-healing wounds. This book has already received a great deal of praise: Ronald Hoffman, MD: "I predict that Honest Medicine will become an instant classic." Jeffrey Dach, MD: "A revolution is at hand, and Julia's new book, Honest Medicine, is leading the charge with banner held high." Mary Shomon: "Julia Schopick is one of those rare people who can go through an agonizingly difficult experience and go on to transform her pain into a passionate, clear-headed campaign to help others." David Brownstein, MD: "Honest Medicine should be required reading for all physicians and patients searching for safe and effective therapies." Julia Schopick is the creator of the award-winning blog, HonestMedicine.com, and has been a published writer and a public relations consultant for more than twenty years. When her husband Tim Fisher became ill in 1990 with a cancerous brain tumor, Julia became his medical advocate and began writing on topics relating to health and medicine published in American Medical News, ADVANCE, SEARCH and Alternative and Complementary Therapies. Her work and essays have been featured in the British Medical Journal, Modern Maturity and the Chicago Sun-Times. Her mission is to use her writing and public relations skills to inform the world about little-known but promising treatments via her website, her presentations and this book, and to empower people in their health choices.

From the Author

For the past 20+ years, I have been a public relations consultant for professionals and private practitioners. The truth is that I never intended to become a patient advocate--or to write a book.

But then, something happened that changed my mind--and the course of my life--forever:

In 1990, my husband Tim Fisher was diagnosed with a very serious, cancerous brain tumor. It was then that I became patient advocate. In this capacity, I found many treatments for Tim which I believe lengthened his life and improved its quality. Case in point: He lived for 15 years after his diagnosis--12 years beyond his doctors' predictions.

Ironically (and sadly), I found that his doctors weren't at all curious about the treatments I found for Tim. It seemed to us that they were only interested in the treatments they themselves prescribed and recommended; treatments they had learned about in medical school and in their journals--no matter how unsuccessful these treatments were for their patients.

In
Honest Medicine, I tell about the incident that caused me to write the book, and why and how I set out to find the treatments I profile. All of them are effective, time-tested and inexpensive, yet all of them have not yet found universal acceptance.

It is my sincere hope that
Honest Medicine will help other people to feel confident about finding treatments that work for them, and that they will not be wedded to the treatments their doctors recommend, even when those treatments are not working.

When Julia Schopick contacted me to be a part of her book, all I knew about her was that she was a friend of Dr. Berkson's and was writing a book about low cost, effective treatments for life threatening diseases. I had been a patient of Dr. Berkson's for 8 years and through his treatment of Alpha Lipoic Acid infusions, diet and vitamins and supplements, had seen my health restored I had a support group for folks with life threatening diseases of over 400 people from all over the world and I loved nothing better than sharing with folks how this wonderful treatment could give one their life back. I had been diagnosed in 2002 with chronic hepatitis c and severe stage 4 cirrhosis and told that I had 2-12 months to live. Now, 8 years later, under Dr. Berkson's treatment my liver was totally rejuvenated, so I felt I had plenty to shout and share about. Therefore, being a part of Julia's book gave me another platform to share this wonderful treatment of Alpha Lipoic Acid, but I had no idea what I was in store for.It was a wonderful experience for which I will always be grateful.
Julia is not just any author. She wrote this book from heart wrenching experiences she went through when her husband was so ill and passed away from a brain tumor. At his passing, she dedicated her life to finding low cost, time tested, and very effective ways of successfully treating catastrophic illnesses and diseases. She did massive hours of research and every treatment in her book is backed up many times over and proven over and over to work.
Over the months prior to publication of her book, I came to know this woman very well and her dedication and determination to finding truths to help people have better health was not only who this woman was, but her knowledge seemed limitless. She came from a medical family and with every fiber of her being she sought truths and help for the sick.
If you have not read her book, please, please get it. It can change your life and they also make excellant gifts. The treatments that she brings out in this book restore lives. I am living proof of one of them. Thank you Julia for your dedication, wisdom and courage to write this wonderful book. Mary Jo Bean

I've been in the health care "business" for over four decades and I often find myself frustrated at what passes for medicine these days. The primary providers are focused only on disease and sickness and they are hell bent on testing us until they fond something wrong. Once a diagnosis is made its time to break out the treatments - drugs, surgery, or radiation. In my observation those approaches seem to cause far more harm than good. Of course, there is a place for those kinds of drastic measures. However, I am convinced they are used too quickly and too often and all the while ignoring or besmirching other approaches that have been helpful and healthy for centuries.

This author has chosen a few approaches that fall outside the standard yet are highly effective and almost infinitely safer than many of the nostrums being shoved at us at practically every visit to the doctor. There's a story in this book about a doctor who refused to offer one form of dietary treatment for epilepsy until he saw it work in his practice, but he was unwilling to even try it. He preferred harmful drugs with an abysmal success rate to a dietary approach that had a long history of helping within just days.

The most reasonable approach to health is prevention. Sometimes that isn't enough. Sadly, the response today is to prescribe drugs, surgery, and radiation - many of which are inappropriate and/or harmful.

This book touches on just a few examples and, as I suggest in the title of this comment, these are just at the surface. The problems and issues beneath the surface are far greater. Until we seriously look for health we will continue to be besieged by popular choices that aren't in our best interest.

Although I`m only halfway through this book I`m so impressed with the content. We all spend way too much on toxic drugs prescribed by our doctors without even doing some research to see if we can help ourselves a little.
My husband takes one of the drugs Julia highlights, LDN, for his MS. For 6 years he has remained in a stable condition and his disease has not progressed. Best of all it`s non toxic and we can afford it!
I always look at alternatives when faced with a new medical crisis and will avoid at all costs what my doctors will just hand out without doing my own research into what it is they are giving me! Most doctors know very little to nothing about nutrition or herbs and vitamins. For me, that is the starting point to dealing with any medical issue. Look at what we are putting in our bodies and how we live our lives. Can we reduce any of the stress? Can we eat more heathy? If we can`t pronounce the contents of the food we eat then back away!
I`m looking forward to finishing the book and I`m saving that delight for a long haul flight coming up next month.
A must read for anyone that cares about themselves and won`t just blindly open their hands and take yet another bottle of pills with no clue of what they do, or their side effects.

    Well done Julia Schopick!

As I am getting older, I purchase a lot of books on health and aging. Not working outside the home any longer, I have more time to read and learn. As with most of the other books, I learn something with each book and this is not the exception. A good portion of the information is repeated but it is nice to see agreement by the authors Recommended.

I did not find the exact help I was hoping for myself, however there are probably some good suggestions that could be employed if you can find the right physicians to help you bring them about.

Julia Schopick highlights 4 treatments for dangerous diseases, that have no or few side effects and are very effective. Sadly they are not used and they are given a bad reputation by the big pharma companies because they won't bring in much cash. She explains that patient groups are funded by big pharma and are also part of the "information machine". Most doctors completely trust the information they get from big pharma. So patients are given the latest, expensive and often very dangerous drugs that are hardly effective. Health care is a business!

I enjoyed this book immensely! The stories of those people benefiting from the four best kept secrets in medicine were inspiring. It's shocking but true that our medical society is reluctant to embrace these proven theropies, especially when there is no other solutions. The helpful information and excellent layout is jam packed into this easy to read book. I am referring this book to my family and friends. I am taking charge and responsibility for my health now. Excellent job Julia!
